November Landscaping Tips
Fall is slowly coming to an end, and with winter right around the corner, you may think your landscaping is done for the year. Before it can be, you have to make sure you get some last-minute things out of the way. What are some November landscaping tasks to get out of the way before December rolls around?
Creating a compost pile to use next spring is the perfect way to use up all the debris in your yard. This can be anything from twigs, leaves, and weeds. Composting can help your soil become richer and make plants flourish! You will be thankful you started creating a pile for next season.
Enriching Your Soil
If you notice your soil is compacted or hard or need to add more to your topsoil, add a compost layer to it. After that, turn the earth over. This will help the ground get more nutrients and add more to the soil's structure. This is also a good time to add more limestone to your soil if it needs it.
Fertilizing and Watering
Before the freezing temperatures hit, you want to get in as much watering and fertilization as you can. Be sure to water any perennials before it's too late. Thanksgiving is usually around the last day where you can water.
Retain Your Seeds
If you are interested in growing some veggies next season, now is the time to save some seeds. Try to keep them away from moisture and avoid bright light. It's a good idea to keep them in a dark space in a tightly covered container or sealed bag. That way, they will be able to grow correctly when it's time to plant them.
Roots and Bulbs
November is the perfect time to get bulbs and roots ready to store away for the season. You should dig them up around the time of the first frost. You can also dig up perennials that need to be replanted or replaced before the soil gets too hard and cold.
Crimson clover and ryegrass are two typical cover crops to grow in your yard. They will help suppress weeds and prevent erosion from happening. They can also condition your soil! Cover crops are also good for being able to attract helpful bugs and insects to your yard. They can help ward off pests that you don't want hanging around.
